Welcome to the January issue of Grow Your Own! First of all, I want to wish you all a happy, healthy and garden-packed New Year! This is an exciting time on the gardening calendar because although things may still be quiet outside, the whole season is stretched out ahead of us! Personally, I can’t wait to get started, so I am sure I’ll be getting some super-hot chillies in the propagator in the coming weeks
FEBRUARY ISSUE:
Welcome to the February issue of Grow Your Own! Although it is still a bit early to start a lot of your outdoor crops, you can scratch that itch and get some early and under cover plants out of the starting gates! Aubergines are a great choice for an early start, and we are showcasing our five favourite varieties.
MARCH ISSUE:
Welcome to the March issue of Grow Your Own! Here on the GYO team, we are all thrilled to see spring on the horizon, and we are itching to get started with our favourite crops! Propagators are being dusted off up and down the country, seed tins are out, and we are ready to get started!
APRIL ISSUE:
Welcome to the April issue of Grow Your Own!! This has got to be one of my favourite times of year in the garden – the whole growing season stretched out in front of us to make the most of, and sowings can start in earnest! Find a list of the crops you can sow, plant and harvest now on page 91 to get your plot out of the starting gates! We will also be looking at the best ways to cost of living-proof your plot this year (pg. 63), the best crops for container growing (pg. 40) and some brilliant ways to protect your garden from climate change (pg. 84). If that isn’t enough, we will be showcasing five of the best courgette varieties to grow this year (pg. 38) and taking a look at some amazing recipes to get the best from your harvests (pg. 103).
MAY ISSUE:
Welcome to the spring special issue of Grow Your Own! Spring is a wonderful time in the garden – a time for fresh starts, a time for new beginnings. It is always exciting to see the potential of the gardening year stretching out in front of you and all the possibility it holds. As well as everything that is fresh and new, we also welcome back well-loved garden friends – varieties we grow each year, tools handed down, dusted off ready for use, and much more. We’d love to hear your favourite thing about spring in the garden, so do get in touch. Our contributors are making the most of this busy time in the season, with plenty of crops in the spotlight this month – Anne Swithinbank is talking all things cauliflower (page 18), the RHS is sharing a detailed step-by-step to French beans (page 22), Ellen Mary is singing the praises of the humble turnip and its many healthy and wellbeing benefits (page 80), and we look at some of the best squash and carrot varieties – and much more! We hope you have a wonderful month in the garden, and look forward to all those bumper crops heading our way.
JUNE ISSUE:
Welcome to the June issue of Grow Your Own! It really is all go in the garden this month, with sowing, planting and harvesting all on the agenda, as well as plenty of plant care! It is a really lovely time of the year as we get ready to welcome the summer months through the gate.
JULY ISSUE:
Welcome to the July issue of Grow Your Own! Summer is here and the garden is in full swing. We are probably all enjoying lots of quality time outside – and it is important to remember to take time to just be present in nature and enjoy your space, as well as ticking things off the to do list!
AUGUST ISSUE:
Welcome to the August issue of Grow Your Own! It is the season of plenty in the garden, with harvests coming in thick and fast from a whole host of veg, fruit and herbs. With any luck we can enjoy lazy evenings on the plot, taking in everything we have achieved this season – as well as preparing those crops that will be seeing us through the winter months.
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER ISSUE:
Welcome to the combined September/October issue of Grow Your Own! As we prepare for the season to turn, this is a wonderful time of plenty in the garden, and we can squirrel some of our harvests away for the autumn and winter months. We may not feel ready to let go of the peak gardening season yet, but at the same time thoughts also start to turn to crops to overwinter. There are plenty of great options to sow and plant over the coming months (page 70), and of course those gorgeous deep winter greens are always a great addition to the plot (page 40). As well as the sowing and caring for your plants, it is also time to step into the kitchen and get preserving and cooking your precious harvests. However, if you aren’t feeling hugely inspired, we have some wonderful alternative ideas for your pickings (page 75), as well as some great information about making the most of your butternut squash (page 78).
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER ISSUE:
Welcome to the winter issue of Grow Your Own! This may not seem like the time of year we commonly associate with gardening, but fear not. There is still plenty to do to keep you busy! There are a number of crops you can continue to cultivate over these colder months (page 10), and there is lots of plot maintenance to be done, from clearing (page 65), digging (page 53) and giving the garden a revamp (page 36), as well as seed saving (page 26), and there are still harvests to be taken (page 68). As well as this, thoughts start to turn towards the festive season and celebrations. Have you ever considered growing your own Christmas dinner? We have some great advice to get you ready for a plot-to-plate feast (page 73), home-grown decorations (page 70) and even some wonderful cocktail ideas to utilise your crops (page 76). We hope you have a wonderful November and December, and here’s to a whole new gardening season on the horizon!
